King William I The Conqueror by presterjohn1 King William I The Conqueror by presterjohn1
First in a proposed series of conjectural ink portraits of medieval English monarchs.

This is William I, Duke of Normandy and later King of England. He is portrayed here to show his ambition and his grim determination to bend England to his will. According to descriptions he was a stocky, strong-built fellow and I have tried to convey that here. The haircut is severe, but true to images of the Normans as shown in art of the period, particularly the Bayeux Tapestry.

William II was the descendant of Rollo, Duke of Normandy. Rollo's ancestry is uncertain, but sagas tell of viking ancestors, and that Rollo may have disowned by his father and struck out to win his own dominion. He was granted lands in what is now Normandy in the Northern Fronteir, by the weak king of France to help ward off invasions.
